Does anyone recognise one of these spiders?

EDIT: (about 2.5" across)

Sue's scared, due to the wasp-like markings on the back. Despite my user name, I don't have any real spider-species-identification-fu, though.

EDIT: "squealed like a rabid squirrel", in fact.

Looks like a regular house spider to me. Or Tegenaria gigantea/domestica if you want to sound smart. ;o)

I concur.. and with the 2.5" scale, then yes, gigantea. Nothing to be worried about, apart from the fact that its a large spider (or a medium sized one for us Australians)

Reasons never to move to Australia, #7.

(#1 to #6 are mostly poisonous and reptilian..)

Australia has lost of poisonous spiders too, and afaik we don't have any (indigenous ones).

I think Sue feels much the same way... and would be hard pushed to choose between flying and spiders as the main reason :}

Sorry to break this to you, but...

Water spiders & large house spiders can give you a nasty nip, but no worse than a bee sting.

The one you need to be careful of is Dysdera crocata the woodloouse spider. Not particularly dangerous, but they bite *hard* and the venom is very painful.

Usually found where there are woodlice (which they eat), but sometimes find their way into houses - I once found one on a towel I was about to wrap round my nether regions having just taken a shower [shudder]

Tegenerii thingy. Not dangerous but if they're big they can nip through the skin, so handle them with gloves, or in a jam jar!

My cat killed one. Brave kitty. Probably won't work if I post him though.

Sue did mention having a cta would be nice. I think the Post Office would frown on a cat in the post, though.

JESUS CHRIST ON A BIKE!
Cut-tag that, can you? I really don't want that on my friends view all day!

Could just be a really big house spider.
