phew... brake pads changed, eventually. the punches I got were too wide for the holes (grrrr) but were able to get the pins moving so that I could push them out with a screwdriver. I guess you don't expect to get beautiful clean parts on a car 12 years old-- but the pins and pads seemed to be covered with caked brake dust. Anyway, I finally got them out-- had to deviate somewhat from the Haynes book to get the new pads in, but that seems to be normal. The wear on the pads seems awfully uneven-- one is down to 1mm, one still looks to have about 10-15mm. Hmm, I think I need to keep better track of my tyre pressures and get the wheels balanced again.
